100 Quetzales (Issued 2008)

Few Central American banknotes balance pre-Columbian iconography with colonial portraiture as deliberately as the 100 Quetzales note of the Banco de Guatemala’s modern series, pairing a Mayan ceremonial figure with a prominent ecclesiastical portrait in a design that speaks directly to Guatemala’s layered cultural identity. Updated to resist sophisticated counterfeiting while retaining strong national symbolism, the note remains current legal tender.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Francisco Marroquín, the first Bishop of Guatemala and founder of the Colegio Mayor, rendered in the right-centre field with considerable intaglio depth, his clerical collar and composed expression lending the composition a formal dignity. Text beneath reads “OBISPO Y LICENCIADO FRANCISCO MARROQUÍN, DEFENSOR DE LOS INDÍGENAS Y CREADOR DEL COLEGIO MAYOR”. To the left, a vibrantly coloured Mayan ceremonial figure is depicted in turquoise, red and ochre, and a resplendent quetzal bird in vivid green appears at the upper left. “BANCO DE GUATEMALA” with “GUATEMALA, CENTRO AMERICA” is printed across the top, “CIEN QUETZALES” sits centrally in bold red, the issue date “12 DE MARZO DE 2008” appears on the left margin, and a holographic device sits on the right with the serial number printed twice and a vertical security thread embedded in the paper.

The reverse presents an architecturally detailed engraving of the University of San Carlos de Borromeo in Antigua Guatemala, one of the oldest universities in the Americas, founded in 1676. The central vignette depicts a colonnaded arcade with elegant arched vaulting receding in perspective, framing a well-tended garden courtyard in warm reds and greens, with a colonial Baroque facade behind. Intricate guilloche latticework in ochre and brown fills the flanking fields, a ghosted image of the Mayan figure appears to the right in pale rose, and a small Guatemalan flag sits at the lower right. “CIEN QUETZALES” is printed beneath the vignette, the numeral “100” sits at the upper right, and “BANCO DE GUATEMALA” repeats across the top.
