200 Quetzales (Issued 2009)

Few Central American banknotes combine patriotic portraiture, musical heritage and a clear polymer panel as ambitiously as the 200 Quetzales, the highest denomination in regular Guatemalan circulation. Issued by the Banco de Guatemala and bearing the authorisation date 18 de Febrero de 2009, the note carries a triple portrait on the face and a tribute to the nation’s marimba tradition on the reverse, and it remains current legal tender.

On the front, the dominant element is a grouped portrait of three figures rendered in fine intaglio engraving — Mariano Gálvez, Mariano Rivera Paz and Manuel Estrada Cabrera — presented in a formal, closely framed trio against a light background with subtle geometric tonal work. The right portion carries the heading “BANCO DE GUATEMALA / REPÚBLICA DE GUATEMALA” with the denomination “Q200 / DOSCIENTOS QUETZALES” in confident letterforms. The palette is a cool, airy light blue with warm reddish-brown and deep teal accents in the upper right. Two signatures carry the titles “PRESIDENTA” and “GERENTE GENERAL”, and the clear left-hand polymer panel features a stylised resplendent quetzal bird with long tail feathers in vivid greens and reds, embedded with a security strip marked “BG”. The serial number is printed in the lower right.

The reverse centres on Guatemala’s musical heritage. To the left, a sepia-toned image depicts a marimba — the national instrument — in careful detail, captioned “Marimba Cromática / Sebastián Hurtado”, identifying the chromatic marimba and the key figure in its development. Above it, a decorative scroll reproduces sheet music titled “La Flor Café / Himno Académico” in aged parchment tones. The central section shows a grey-toned modern multi-storey building captioned “Sede de las Instalaciones / Mariano Palomo”, with a robed figure at its base for scale. The heading “BANCO DE GUATEMALA / REPÚBLICA DE GUATEMALA” runs across the top, the denomination “200 / DOSCIENTOS QUETZALES” is restated at the lower left, and the transparent polymer panel to the right carries the same quetzal motif beside a large circular optically variable element.
