50 Quetzales (Issued 2012)

The 50 Quetzales note remains current legal tender in Guatemala and circulates as part of the Banco de Guatemala’s modern series. Its security features have been refined through successive updates to stay ahead of counterfeiting while retaining its core iconography, honouring a key figure in the founding of the national currency and celebrating the country’s coffee heritage on the reverse.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Carlos O. Zachrisson, identified along the lower right as “Licenciado Carlos O. Zachrisson, Ministro de Hacienda y Gestor de la Reforma Monetaria 1923–1926”, honouring his role in establishing the quetzal as Guatemala’s currency. The portrait is rendered in detailed intaglio with careful cross-hatching, positioned to the right. The background is composed of soft salmon, rose and pale green tones overlaid with intricate guilloche, with a quetzal bird in flight in the upper left and a large watermark window to the left of centre. A bold red numeral “50” sits centrally with “CINCUENTA QUETZALES” in serif lettering, “BANCO DE GUATEMALA” is printed in red along the top, the serial number appears twice, and a gold optically variable device on the right edge shifts with the viewing angle.

The reverse is dominated by a central vignette depicting a coffee harvest, labelled “CORTE DE CAFE”, showing several workers among coffee plants with large burlap sacks and a volcanic peak rising in the background beneath an overcast sky. The scene is rendered in warm ochre, brown and green tones, framed within layers of red and terracotta guilloche ornamentation. “BANCO DE GUATEMALA” repeats in red along the top, “CINCUENTA QUETZALES” runs beneath the vignette, the numeral “50” appears at the lower left and upper right, and a further gold-and-green optically variable element sits at the upper right. The left border carries vertical bands of Mayan-inspired patterning in red and green.
