1,000 Ðồng B Dong (Issued 1987)
The 1987 Foreign Exchange Certificate series issued by the Ngan Hang Ngoai Thuong Viet Nam — the Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam — comprised a distinct family of denominations printed in a unified graphic style and intended exclusively for use within a restricted monetary circuit separate from the general domestic currency. The 1,000 Dong B certificate sits among the higher values in this special-purpose series, sharing its overall colour palette and geometric approach with the other denominations while being distinguished by its bold large-numeral centrepiece. These certificates, often referred to colloquially as Dong B notes, were issued to overseas Vietnamese and foreign visitors as a controlled means of transacting in the Vietnamese economy during the late socialist reform period. The “B” designation marks this note as belonging to the foreign exchange certificate sub-series rather than the standard circulation dong.
On the front, the note is printed predominantly in a vivid deep rose-pink and crimson on a lighter pink background, creating a single-colour scheme of considerable intensity. The entire face is covered with intricate guilloché rosette and lattice patterning, forming a dense, lace-like security background across the full field of the note. At the upper centre, the issuing authority name is printed in Latin script reading “NGAN HANG NGOAI THUONG VIET NAM”, arranged in a horizontal band. To the left and right of this heading, the denomination “1000” is printed in smaller figures. The centrepiece of the design is a large diamond-shaped cartouche framed by fine line engraving, within which the numeral “1000” is rendered in very large, bold display figures with an ornate, slightly three-dimensional character. Below this central cartouche, the written denomination appears in two lines of text reading “MOT NGHIN” above “DONG B”, both in clear serif capital lettering. Serial numbering is printed in the upper right area, with the alphanumeric series “EE 0019081” visible in dark ink. The corners of the note each carry repeated “1000” inscriptions within decorative circular and rectangular frames. Ornamental floral and rosette motifs anchor each corner, and the entire composition is enclosed within a multi-rule border with fine inner detail. No portrait is present on this note; the design is entirely typographic and geometric in character.
The reverse is printed in the same pale rose-pink and crimson tonal range as the front, though the ink appears lighter and the design somewhat less densely worked. The central vignette depicts a large architectural building rendered in fine line engraving — a substantial multi-storey structure with a symmetrical facade, broad steps leading to the entrance, and a flat-roofed modern institutional character consistent with Vietnamese government or banking architecture of the mid-twentieth century. This building is understood to represent the headquarters of the Vietcombank, the Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam. To the upper left of the reverse, a circular emblem or seal is printed, incorporating stylised lettering and a monogram design associated with the Vietcombank institution. Latin script text runs across the upper portion of the reverse, partially obscured by the show-through from the front design but legible as the issuing bank name in a repeat of the front inscription. Across the lower margin of the reverse, a clear line of text in Latin script reads “PHIEU NAY CHI DUNG CHI TRA TAI NHUNG NOI QUY DINH”, which is the Vietnamese-language restriction notice indicating that this certificate was valid for use only at designated locations. The paper shows some natural ageing, and the guilloché ghost patterns from the front are visible as show-through across the reverse field.
