2,000 Ðồng Dong (Issued 1987)

The 2,000 Dong banknote issued by the State Bank of Vietnam in 1987 was withdrawn from circulation as part of Vietnam’s broader monetary reforms during the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period in which the country was navigating the economic transition brought about by the Doi Moi reform programme. Severe inflation during this era rendered lower-denomination paper notes obsolete at pace, and the pre-polymer series to which this note belongs was eventually superseded by more durable polymer issues introduced in subsequent decades. The 1987 series represented one of the final generations of traditional paper-substrate Vietnamese banknotes before the currency infrastructure modernised substantially. As a withdrawn note, it no longer holds legal tender status within Vietnam.

On the front, the dominant feature is a portrait of Ho Chi Minh, the founding leader of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, rendered in a finely detailed engraving style to the right of centre. The portrait depicts him in a three-quarter facing pose with his characteristic short beard and a calm, composed expression, set against a pale green and peach-toned guilloché background that fills the right half of the note with fine rosette and wave patterning. To the left of the portrait, a large decorative panel carries an undulating geometric background design in muted olive and sage green tones, incorporating a broad scroll-like frame. The state emblem of Vietnam — a circular device featuring a red star above a cog and rice stalks — appears prominently in the upper left area of the note. Above the central field, the issuing authority text in Latin script reads “CONG HOA XA HOI CHU NGHIA VIET NAM”, printed in dark, bold serif typography across the upper banner. The denomination is stated centrally in large bold text reading “HAI NGHIN DONG”, with the numeral “2000” appearing in two corners — upper right within a dark rectangular panel, and lower left in a similar decorative box. The serial number “RA 0093137” is printed twice in red, once to the left and once to the right of the central field, in a clear sans-serif typeface. The year “1987” appears at the base of the note, centred just above the lower border. The lower border is decorated with an intricate band of dark engraved scrollwork and floral motifs running the full width of the note.

The reverse presents a detailed central vignette depicting an industrial facility, likely a factory or power plant complex, rendered in purple-brown engraving with considerable architectural detail. The scene shows a large building with a tall chimney stack emitting smoke, accompanied by a construction crane to the left and additional industrial structures extending across the composition. Clouds are suggested in the sky above the scene, adding depth to the engraving. To the right of the central vignette, a decorative panel features fine diagonal and floral guilloché patterning in warm yellow and olive tones, with stylised plant or grain motifs running vertically. In the upper right, the issuing authority text reads “NGAN HANG NHA NUOC VIET NAM” in dark bold serif lettering, with “2000” in a dark bordered box to the upper right corner. The lower section of the reverse carries the denomination text “HAI NGHIN DONG” in bold dark lettering centred beneath the main vignette, with the numeral “2000” in a matching decorative box to the lower left. The left margin features an ornate vertical border panel with scrollwork and floral elements in dark ink, matching the decorative language of the front. The overall colour palette of the reverse is composed of muted purples, browns, ochre yellows, and pale greens, consistent with the lithographic printing techniques of the period.
